Focus and Scope

UMI Medical Journal (UMJ) is a peer-reviewed, open-access journal published by the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Muslim Indonesia. UMJ aims to disseminate updated scientific findings and developments that contribute to the advancement of medicine and health sciences. The journal welcomes rigorous research, scholarly reviews, and clinically informative case reports addressing health and disease from basic biomedical, clinical, experimental, and community health perspectives.

The journal’s scope reflects its commitment to the integration of biomedical knowledge, clinical practice, and population health. While UMJ has an established interest in nutrition and obstetrics and gynecology, including gynecologic oncology, it also considers relevant contributions from other medical and health science disciplines.

UMJ welcomes manuscripts in, but not limited to, the following areas:

  1. Basic Biomedical and Experimental Sciences
Research on the biological and pathological mechanisms of health and disease, including anatomy, histology, physiology, biochemistry, microbiology, immunology, pathology, and related biomedical disciplines. This area includes laboratory-based and experimental studies that investigate disease processes, biological responses, and potential therapeutic approaches.
  2. Clinical Medicine and Medical Specialties
Studies addressing the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and clinical management of diseases across medical and surgical specialties. Topics may include clinical characteristics, disease progression, treatment outcomes, complications, prognosis, and patient-related outcomes. UMJ also considers clinically relevant case reports that provide useful diagnostic, therapeutic, or scientific insights.
  3. Nutrition, Metabolism, and Noncommunicable Diseases
Research on nutritional status, dietary components, metabolic processes, and their relationships with health and disease. This includes studies on diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, obesity, cardiovascular and other metabolic conditions, as well as their risk factors, complications, and management. Research investigating nutritional compounds or bioactive substances and their potential health effects is also within the journal’s scope.
  4. Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Health
Research on maternal health, pregnancy, childbirth, gynecological disorders, reproductive function, infertility, and reproductive health across the life course. The journal particularly welcomes relevant contributions in gynecologic oncology, including research on cancer biology, diagnosis, clinical management, treatment, and outcomes. Studies related to reproductive surgery, perioperative care, and associated clinical conditions are also considered.
  5. Pharmacology, Therapeutics, and Medical Interventions
Research evaluating medicines, therapeutic agents, treatment strategies, and interventions intended to prevent or manage disease. This area includes pharmacological effects, treatment efficacy and safety, adverse effects, drug-related outcomes, and emerging or regenerative therapies. Computational and in-silico investigations may be considered when they address medically relevant biological targets or therapeutic questions.
  6. Medical Laboratory Sciences, Diagnostics, and Biomarkers
Research on laboratory methods, diagnostic procedures, analytical performance, specimen-related factors, and the clinical interpretation of laboratory findings. This includes studies of hematological, biochemical, molecular, genetic, and other biomarkers used in disease detection, monitoring, prognosis, or evaluation of treatment response.
  7. Public Health, Community Health, and Health Promotion
Research examining health and disease at the community or population level, including epidemiology, disease prevention, health promotion, health-related behaviors, and determinants of health. Studies addressing health literacy, access to care, and community health issues are welcome when they provide a clear contribution to medical or health science knowledge.
  8. Mental Health, Neurology, and Behavioral Aspects of Health
Research on mental, neurological, and cognitive health, including psychiatric conditions, cognitive impairment, mental health literacy, and factors influencing health-related behavior. The journal considers clinical and population-based studies, as well as research on the relationship between physical health conditions and mental or cognitive outcomes.
  9. Forensic, Medicolegal, and Ethical Aspects of Medicine
Medically grounded research and case reports concerning forensic examination, injury assessment, medicolegal practice, and ethical issues relevant to healthcare and clinical practice. Submissions should demonstrate a clear medical, diagnostic, public health, or clinical relevance.
  10. Evidence Synthesis and Scholarly Reviews
Review articles that critically synthesize current evidence in medicine and health sciences, including systematic reviews, narrative reviews, and bibliometric analyses. Reviews should address a clearly defined question or topic and provide a meaningful contribution to understanding, research, or clinical practice.

UMJ considers original research articles, review articles, and clinically or scientifically informative case reports. Submissions may employ appropriate observational, experimental, clinical, laboratory-based, computational, or evidence-synthesis methods. Studies involving human participants or animals must meet applicable ethical requirements and provide the relevant ethical information in the manuscript.

Manuscripts are expected to demonstrate scientific rigor, relevance to medicine or health sciences, and a clear contribution to knowledge, research, or healthcare practice. The inclusion of a topic within this scope does not guarantee acceptance; all submissions are subject to the journal’s editorial screening and peer-review process.
